This fern has slender black stems and delicate, triangular green fronds, which shiver in the slightest breeze. The leaflets are pale pink when young and develop to a pale then dark green. When the plant matures, clusters of brown sporangia (spore sacs) appear on the undersides of the leaves. This fern can be used to soften a display or can be placed on its own.

My Mysterious Garden

A shady spot, away from direct sunlight, is best. Soil and water A soil mixture with good drainage is essential. The fern should be kept moist at all times during spring and summer and into early autumn, but can be allowed a winter rest with minimal watering. Monthly applications of pot plant food during the growing season (late spring to autumn) should see to its needs, or you can administer a weak liquid manure every two weeks.

Temperature and humidity

Maidenhair ferns can tolerate cold but there should be no sudden drop in temperature during the growing season. These plants thrive in humid conditions and a fine mist-spray of the surrounding air and the placing of a dish of water near to the plants, will raise the humidity during dry weather.

General care

Dead fronds should be cut back regularly. These plants should not be allowed to become pot-bound and should be potted on in spring.

Pests and diseases

Scale, mealy bugs and red spider mites.
