Some people say you should water plants from overhead, while others advocate surface irrigation. Which is best?

When you water your plants from overhead, you water both the foliage and the ground at the same time. When you surface irrigate, you only wet the soil. With most plants it doesn’t matter if the foliage gets wet, but some plants are prone to fungus diseases such as mildew, which are worse if the plants‘ foliage is watered in the evening – especially in warm, humid conditions. So it is better to surface irrigate these plants, which include roses, dahlias, tomatoes and potatoes.

My Mysterious Garden

Plants which may need more water than others, such as citrus, or trees and shrubs in a lawn, can also be surface i irrigated to ensure that they get a deep soaking. When surface irrigating, you can either flood the whole area with water or make individual wells around each plant, shrub or tree and then fill these up with water at regular intervals.

Sprinklers and hoses

There seem to be so many kinds of hoses and sprinklers on the market that I am totally confused as to which would be the best for my garden. What do you suggest?

There is certainly a vast number of sprinklers on the market. Which one you choose really depends on the size of your garden. Sprinklers which throw their water over a very large area – like pulsating sprinklers and the large oscillating sprinklers – are not necessary in a small garden, where you would be better off with a smaller, simpler type. Many sprinklers are adjustable – you can set the sprinkler so that water does not fall where it is not needed. Buy the best-quality hose you can afford – it will last longer. Keeping your hose out of the sun will help prolong its life.

To make watering easier, have a tap and a hosepipe in each section of the garden so you won’t have to drag one hose all over the place – not only hard work but also bad for the hose. If possible, each hose should have its own sprinkler: one which throws out plenty of water for a large lawn or a smaller sprinkler for a more confined area. By using special, easy-to-change hose fittings, a hand-held sprinkler for the watering of seedlings can be fitted to various hoses quite easily.
