These roses are of the long-limbed, spreading variety — and can either be left to organize themselves, or can be pruned and trained to fit in with almost any garden plan. Their security value should notbe underestimated: here is the answer to truly decorative spikes.
Climbers produce longclimbing shoots and must besupported and tied to a fence or pergola. For the best display, annual shoots should not be pruned or shortened, but tied horizontally.
Ramblers have a prostrate growth habit, and if left alone, crawl along the ground. Alternatively, they can be trained over a support many metres high, to hang gracefully down again.
Spire roses grow upright to 2 to 3 m and do not produce willowy canes. Their Hybrid Tea-shaped flowers make good cut roses. They are suited to tall background displays, in corners or as hedges, planted 1,5 m apart. If necessary, top the basal-stems at a height of 1,2 m to encourage branching and flowering.
Shrub roses flower repeatedly and their growth habit ranges from neat to willowy. They can be cut back or shaped at any time of the year and only need to be thinned out in winter. The taller types can be trained as Pillar roses by planting them next to a tall pole and fastening them with a strong rope. They can also be trained as Climbers on fences and walls.
altissimo

Amber spire
Large, globular buds are a deep cream, revealing intense amber colouring in the centre as the full, cup-shaped blooms unfold. The vigorous plant will stand freely with a slight arching effect. A perfect colour match with ‘Just Joey.
aperitif
Created by Sam McGredy of New Zealand, and perhaps one of the world’s greats. ‘Aperitif’ is a climber with almost ideal growth characteristics and clear-yellow blooms of perfect Hybrid Tea shape, produced all season. Strong basal shoots grow to about 1,5 m, when they start to arch with the weight of the buds. Soon new shoots appear on the upper curves of the arches, each carrying a pickable bloom. This continues until it has reached a height of almost 3 m, unsupported. Trained on a pole or other support to arch downwards, it gives the effect of a yellow curtain.
ballerina
Large trusses of single, small flowers in shades of pink, not unlike those of the hydrangea in both shape and colour. The plant has a vigorous, prolific growth habit; if unsupported, the long basal stems will give a willowy effect when weighed down by flower trusses. Flowers repeatedly
Blossom time

clair matin
Semi-double blooms carried in clusters throughout the season are of a shell-pink colour with golden stamens. Vigorous, healthy growth with many flowering side stems and tight clusters of blooms on the end of every shoot; forms a neat shrub with a willowy effect. Can grow unsupported or it can be trained up a pole or over a pergola
cocktail
Large, single blooms of crimson with a golden eye are produced in huge clusters. A profuse and continuous flowerer that carries its masses of blooms all along its strong basal branches and on the many side shoots; can be cut back during the season to keep in shape and to encourage a new flush of blooms. Freestanding or can be trained over a pergola or fence.
compassion
This is a really tough rose. Unblemished by leaf disease, it performs outstandingly by growing into a huge 3 m by 3 m, self-supporting shrub, or as a climber when supported by a fence, pergola or pillar. The medium-sized blooms are of an immaculate Hybrid Tea shape and the firm-textured, delicate pink petals reflex as they unfold, revealing not only a pleasing apricot-yellow base, but also a very unusual, sweet fragrance. With new growth sprouting all the time and blooms appearing on each tip, be it a short side stem, or a lush basal shoot, there is never a time that this robust rose is without colour.
Coral spire
These flowers are perfectly shaped and sufficiently large to be superb exhibition blooms. The colour is a clear, distinct coral-pink. Growth is very vigorous and neatly upright with large, leathery, deep-green leaves for additional decoration.
Crazy spire
Shapely, Hybrid Tea-type blooms of an interesting combination of orange-red with yellow stripes and spots. The plant grows upright to 1,8 m and is slightly arching.

The full, double blooms arevelvet-red. ‘Don Juan’ can be trimmed to a neat, 2-m-high shrub, or it does equally well as a climber when the branches are supported over a pergola or high fence.
galway bay
Medium-sized, shapely buds of cerise-pink are produced on a vigorous, upright-growing, healthy climber. It can be trimmed to encourage new flushes of blooms.
